Important Notice for Faculty and Staff re: Email Outages This Weekend, October 9-11

As we prepare for this weekend's migration of student email to Gmail, we want to remind all Faculty and Staff of the following:
  • At 7pm on Saturday, October 9th the delivery of all messages "coming to" or "leaving from" the University will be stopped and queued up until all the migration work is completed. This means that if you inspect your email INBOX during the migration process, you will only see messages delivered as of 7pm Saturday. This will ensure that there will be no loss of email for the community during the migration of student mail to Gmail.
  • The flow of email into and out of the University will resume after student migration is complete at about 5am Monday, October 11th. Depending upon the number of messages queued up during this period it may take several hours for the complete delivery of all email.
  • Please be aware that there is distinct possibility that we may restore the flow of email prior to the 5am Monday time, perhaps as early as Sunday morning.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the University Help Desk:
(718) 817-3999 or via e-mail via: helpdesk@fordham.edu

Gmail Deployment Rescheduled to Later in the Fall Semester

The planned Gmail Go-Live scheduled for this weekend, August 6th through August 8th has been rescheduled to later in the fall semester.

There are numerous concerns that we had to take into consideration prior to making the decision not to Go-Live this weekend. Most importantly, we do not to date have a signed contract with Google. This impacts our ability to offer you all the exciting features available in the Gmail environment.

We are aware that this is disappointing news to our students however we, Fordham IT have chosen to deliver the e-mail product that we promised. In order to do that we had no choice but to delay the Gmail Go-Live.

We will continue to update you via e-mail as plans for Go-Live are finalized.

GMail Information Overview

Fordham University has partnered with Google to provide our students with access to the powerful communication and collaboration services available under Google Apps Education Edition, which is a suite of hosted communication and collaboration applications designed for institutions of higher education.

The first phase of this implementation will be the replacement of the Student Email System, Mirapoint, with GMail in the Fall 2010 semester. Eventually we hope to provide additional features, such as online document storage.

The only applications that will be available to Fordham students in Fall 2010 will be GMail (with Contacts) and Google Calendar.
As the University’s provider of these applications, Google guarantees an uptime of 99.9 percent, in a safe and secure environment. GMail will provide larger mailboxes and allow for larger attachments to be sent and received. Students will also benefit from the power of Google Search in e-mail, access to a shared calendaring system, and support for mobile devices.

All eligible students at Fordham University will be given an email address and an electronic mailbox in the Fordham University domain within Google Apps. Current students will continue to use their existing @fordham.edu email address. Students who graduate from Fordham will keep their Fordham email address and will be able to use their electronic mailbox for life.

GMail from Google Is Coming Soon!

The decision has been made to move student email from Mirapoint to Gmail. Under our current timetable the plan is to have everything in place before the beginning of the Fall 2010 semester. Our goal is to provide all students with information regarding their new Gmail accounts prior to the end of the Spring 2010 semester. This will provide ample time for any transitions that may need to be made. Many other Universities either have already moved to Gmail or are planning moves in the near future. One of the many advantages of Gmail is that it will provide you with over 7GB of email storage. We will be posting more details as they become available, so please continue to watch this space for future developments. If you have any questions or comments you may email Student Technology Services at sts@fordham.edu.
